What does it mean to be an audiovisual producer?

Have you ever wondered what the role of an audiovisual producer is? First of all, you should know the answer to the question "What is audiovisual production and what does it consist of?" But do not worry, with today’s article you will get out of doubt, as you will end up having quite clear these concepts. In addition, we will also delve into the roles that make up a production team. Let’s get started!

      What is audiovisual production?

Before defining the concept, you have to bear in mind that the production of productions of this magnitude is not finished in a week. Everything depends on their complexity and can take up to 2 years. This is because it is a long and complex process that requires careful planning so that in each of the stages of the production process the maximum possible performance is reached, before being definitively released.

So how would we define audiovisual production?

We tend to understand it as the art of producing content for various audiovisual media, including cinema and television. It ranges from financial aspects such as capital, logistical and technical resources, to what will be the daily tasks that each of the workers will perform.

Who makes up the production team?

Generally, production is in the hands of a single person if the project is on a small budget. Of course, it can also be done by several people if the project has a larger budget. Of course, films or documentaries with high financial solvency have more sophisticated equipment and have an executive producer, a producer, a co-producer, a production director with their respective assistants and a production manager with their respective assistants.

The production team will work with you throughout the process. Among the main functions we find the following:

      • Find out about the filming permits.

      • Get the locations where the shooting is going to take place.

      • Get the necessary technical equipment.

      • Manage the budget for production..

      • Get the extras, if necessary.

If in the end you are going to be in charge of all the production, all these tasks will be the ones you have to do without delay, because they are the necessary and basic to start any shooting.

Once you know what an audiovisual production is and who is involved in it, you need to know the phases in which it is divided so that you can start your project.

      ESSENTIAL STAGES OF AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION

The people in charge of an audiovisual production take care of the whole process, from the planning or pre-production, the production and the montage or postproduction. These 3 phases must be coordinated between them, with the aim of achieving a quality result.

      The planning: pre-production

The pre-production phase arises when the project is conceived in the person’s head and then begins to develop it. At first, the story is written so that, later, the team of writers can develop the literary script. In addition, in this phase everything you will need to carry out the idea is also concretized: the investment that will be made, the means that will be needed, the professionals that you will hire, the work spaces and the filming locations.

This stage is the most important of the three, as the basis for all subsequent work is established. Therefore, when making any audiovisual production, if it is not all planned point by point in advance, the most sure thing is that the final result is not the expected.

      The development: production

After completing the pre-production stage, the production phase begins, where all these paper-based ideas come to life. For this, a meeting must be held with all the technical team and actors to talk about how the recording will be carried out according to the shooting plan that has been previously set. In addition, for the production to have the expected results, it is essential that everything related to history and its realization is taken into account when making this stage.

This phase can last quite a long time, everything depends on the project to be carried out. It is usual to perform several repetitions of certain shots. Likewise, you will need a coordinated work between all the teams that form the production (sound, lighting, scenography, etc.).

      The final adjustments: post-production

This stage starts when you have all the shots done and it is time to create the full video. In fact, it is in the post-production phase that the assembly and editing take place. For this, the director make the selection of the best recordings, then special effects, music or any other additions that serve to reach the final product will be introduced. It is important to mention that during the assembly there can be unexpected problems that delay its completion, either because some shots are not adequate or because you want to add something last minute.

In addition, at this stage color correction will be done and even add special effects and credits. Finally, the final video will be built to market or distribute it in the medium chosen. When starting the export, it is necessary to take into account which media is going to be targeted, since that depends on the format requirements such as speed of reproduction, compression or other variables

After knowing in greater depth what an audiovisual production is and each of its stages, the next question could be: "What benefits will it give me to study audiovisual production?"

If, for example, you work for a city council or an organisation, it will help you to mount your own audiovisual productions. All this without the need to hire someone external, since you will have enough knowledge to be able to manage the situation. This is the big advantage: you will have greater independence and you will be able to develop your own ideas more easily.
