Today, drones have a series of multiple uses, offering us endless possibilities of use. But have you ever wondered when drones appeared? It all goes back to 1849, when Austria sent unmanned balloons full of bombs to attack Venice. The beginnings of drones were very linked to wars and military uses, at that time their objective was to carry out missions considered highly dangerous.
Therefore, military uses marked the birth of drones, however, in recent years it has been discovered that many more uses can be given to this type of aircraft. In fact, according to the most recent figures, there are now more civilian drones than army drones.
Uses of drones you probably did not know
1. COMMERCIAL: Over the years, commercials realised that the use of drones in the commercial sector can reduce time and costs, as no personnel is needed for this. Commercial uses include home delivery by drones, therefore considering the future with this new type of delivery, as it would reduce its cost and, in turn, how long it takes to reach the consumer.
A clear example of this use is how e-commerce giant Amazon published in its large delivery plans the use of drones for delivery in 30 minutes under a project called Amazon Prime Air. Amazon’s autonomous drones are guided by GPS and can fly at altitudes of up to 400 feet, carrying packs of up to 5 pounds.
2. SECURITY AND EMERGENCY: The use of drones in this sector has been one of the main ones to have a great increase, since it is possible to carry out different programmed video surveillance and locations of objects and people. The ability to fly at low altitudes, along with a high-quality camera such as those possessed by drones, facilitates the search for missing people.
They can also assist in monitoring and, above all, in solving major problems. During confinement, for example, police forces monitored compliance with established mobility restrictions from the air.
3. INVESTIGATIONS: The role of drones in conducting any type of investigation should also be highlighted. They have been very helpful in locating and analyzing archaeological remains because of their ability to tour places that humans cannot and to take photographs at an unimaginable speed.
4. ENVIRONMENTAL: During the last few years, drones have been of great help in developing different functions, including helping to protect the environment. Among them is the management of marine litter. This has made it possible to assess the presence of waste in certain coastal areas more quickly and to design more precise and effective prevention measures.
5. AUDIOVISUAL: As a consequence of this drone revolution, even the audiovisual world also takes into account its use for the production of aerial shots for cinema, television and advertising. They have become an indispensable tool in the sector due to their reduced costs and versatility. We can make incredible shots that years ago were unthinkable.
Drones and audiovisual production
Its emergence in the sector has helped those audiovisual projects that were previously impossible to carry out or required too high an investment. With this new tool, costs are reduced and aerial shots can be made much easier than before. In addition, with the spectacular recordings they provide, your audiovisual productions will reach a higher quality.
Advantages and benefits of drones in the audiovisual field
Previously, aerial shots were reserved for large productions with a high economic capacity. However, with the improved performance of professional drones, it is no longer a problem to get high quality prospects.
If you want to use them in your productions, do not hesitate! Here are a number of advantages over other methods:
Spectacular shots through an innovative perspective, with an angle totally different from the others. It is important to mention that the top shots at a high altitude a few years ago were unthinkable or very expensive, mainly for production and logistics. They will also have a great image quality.
Making drone recordings is much more economical than using helicopters or planes, In addition, they can offer us similar or even better results.
Its small size and versatility in the air allows to make recordings never before seen that with helicopters or planes could not be achieved.
By not being manned by people, the risk of damage to staff is reduced, as they are directed via remote control.
In this way, the use of drones in productions has caused a revolution in the audiovisual world. Aerial drones allow you to capture unique, realistic and surprising shots from different angles. Consequently, it is not surprising that the cinema, seeking to cause a greater impact in the spectators, is incorporating drones more and more in their works. Proof of this is my participation as an aerial drone pilot, in international productions such as "The Witcher" or "Rambo V".
